March 6, 2010 - The GoodLuck boys Present: Diced Music

The concept for diced music originated from Osaka based improviser and instrument builder Charles-Eric Billard, who met us through wtfmusic.org and was coming up to Tokyo to Exhibit his 3D art (check here - http://www.tokyo-ws.org/english/archive/2010/01/wonder-seeds-2010.shtml ) He plays an instrument known as "slitar" which is pictured in its various forms below.

From the dice idea we created a set of rules as follows:

First roll: * number
2 player - 6 players, 1=anyone can play
Second roll: * form/inst:
1 - play your own instrument
2 - extended techniques on instrument
3 - use an object in the room
4 - play someone else's instrument (players have a choice to do this or stick with their instrument)
5 - Hand signals / conduction
6 - listen / don't listen (one player is given an ipod with noises, puts on the headphones, and plays without listening to the other musicians.  Other musicians follow that player)
Third roll: * atmosphere
1 - Ugly vs. Beautifu
2 - funny sounds
3 - As non-musical as possible (without drifting into noise)
4 - loop locking
5 - tiny sounds
6 - abstract off-rhythm

This event was held in Gamuso in Asagaya, Tokyo, a small place with a nice intimate atmosphere for nice quiet playing and interaction between acoustic and electric instruments.

The other major highlight of this event was a solo appearance by Yximalloo - one of the strangest people we have ever met and one of the most interesting unique musicians in Tokyo. I can't really describe his performance, other than "laptop + vocals" but you should really see it.

Video below.  Sorry about the darkness and poor quality, it was taken from an iphone.

January 8, 2010 - The GoodLuck Boys Present: Rainbow Music

This was our first ever improvised game event, held at Chikyuya in Kunitachi, Tokyo. The main stimulus for this one was a visit from Australian freaks known as "God's Wounds" who were doing some shows in Osaka and wanted to do something together with us in Tokyo. Why not get a bunch of different musicians together who are all into various kinds of improvising and make a set of rules from which to improvise?

The rules were simple: one person is selected as conductor. The conductor chooses the musicians and a color for each one, handed out as a cloth. The conductor then shapes the music by drawing with a corresponding colored marker for each musician on a large sheet of paper. Other hand signals can also be used. The musicians follow the shape or feeling of the picture, as well as trying to play to the sound of the color they represent. Each piece could be of any length, and after each one a new conductor and set of musicians is chosen. Thanks to everyone who came, it was a really special and fun event for all. Marcus should get credit here for making this one happen, Sammy was in America visiting family and just barely made it in time to join in on a few pieces. And thus the GLB game events were born, a very magical time and space for a most unusual breed of music.
