January 8, 2010 - The GoodLuck Boys Present: Rainbow Music
This was our first ever improvised game event, held at Chikyuya in Kunitachi, Tokyo. The main stimulus for this one was a visit from Australian freaks known as "God's Wounds" who were doing some shows in Osaka and wanted to do something together with us in Tokyo. Why not get a bunch of different musicians together who are all into various kinds of improvising and make a set of rules from which to improvise?
The rules were simple: one person is selected as conductor. The conductor chooses the musicians and a color for each one, handed out as a cloth. The conductor then shapes the music by drawing with a corresponding colored marker for each musician on a large sheet of paper. Other hand signals can also be used. The musicians follow the shape or feeling of the picture, as well as trying to play to the sound of the color they represent. Each piece could be of any length, and after each one a new conductor and set of musicians is chosen. Thanks to everyone who came, it was a really special and fun event for all. Marcus should get credit here for making this one happen, Sammy was in America visiting family and just barely made it in time to join in on a few pieces. And thus the GLB game events were born, a very magical time and space for a most unusual breed of music.
